Overview

PlainLanguage Pro (PLP) is an online, self-paced skill building course that integrates the IHA’s industry-leading health literacy standards. PLP provides additional knowledge, assessment, and writing skills for the implementation of health literacy principles for consumer facing documents. PLP expands on IHA’s Health Literacy Specialist Communication micro-credential. The course equips both novice and experienced professionals with the tools to better evaluate, create, and refine health literacy materials that are easier for all readers to understand and engage with.

Janet Ohene-Frempong

Strategic Partner - Institute for Healthcare Advancement

Janet Ohene-Frempong (o-HEN-ee frem-PONG), is a plain language and cross-cultural communications consultant with over 25 years of experience in patient/provider communications. She has conducted workshops and provided consultation on plain language 

and cross-cultural communications for a wide range of health information providers, including: health care systems, government agencies, health insurers, pharmaceutical companies, medical publishers, health and human service agencies and schools of medicine, nursing and allied health. She is often an invited speaker at national conferences. 

Ms. Ohene-Frempong has served on several national advisory committees and was a founding member of the Clear Language Group, a consortium of nationally recognized health literacy experts. In May of 2012, she was the fourth recipient of the IHA Health Literacy Hero Award, given by the Institute for Healthcare Advancement to recognize efforts in advancing the field of health literacy. She is currently a Strategic Partner with the same Institute for Healthcare Advancement, a not-for-profit, private operating foundation providing health care and improving health literacy at the national level.

Jann brings over 25 years of experience designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive social marketing campaigns with health education theory at their core. She brings expertise in writing and designing award winning plain language print and multi-media materials. Her true love is helping large organizations adopt policies to enhance their clear and effective communication and health equity initiatives.

She wrote the AHRQ shared decision-making curriculum with her team. And then lead the national train-the-trainer initiative – which resulted in nearly 800 health professionals becoming certified trainers. She conducts 3-day advanced plain language writing workshops for the Institute for Healthcare Advancement (IHA) and mentors newcomers in the field. 

Jann received her Ed.S. in instructional design from Indiana University. She received IU’s Distinguished Alumni Award for making exemplary contributions to her community and the nation through professional service, public service and civic activities. She received Health Literacy Hero Awards from IHA and Maryland’s Horowitz Center for Health Literacy. She is a Strategic Partner with IHA.
